I-9 Compliance Training

Does your human resources team have the knowledge and skillset they need to properly complete Form I-9 for EVERY hire in your organization? Are you prepared to handle complex I-9 scenarios, such as hiring an asylum seeker or reverifying work authorization documents? Do you know how to self-audit your files and make corrections to existing Form I-9?

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced increased scrutiny of I-9 compliance in 2019 – and the numbers support their claims.

The best way to prepare for an I-9 audit is to be proactive. Our attorneys work with human resources departments across the country to conduct I-9 trainings that inform and empower HR professionals and ensure consistent, reliable Form I-9 completion.

Our four-hour, interactive training includes:

  • I-9 Basics – an overview of the I-9 program and a look at each section of the form. During the “Basics” portion of the presentation, we will introduce terms you will find on Form I-9 and show common areas where even experienced HR professionals can make mistakes. We will review common forms of documentation, and participants will gain familiarity with immigration terms they will encounter while completing Form I-9 for immigrant and nonimmigrant workers.
  • I-9 Advanced – an in-depth look at employment scenarios for Form I-9. Form I-9 is required to verify an employee is authorized to work in the United States. For U.S. citizens, this is as simple as presenting a U.S. passport, or a driver’s license and U.S. birth certificate. For those outside of the United States, the forms of identification will vary based on the immigration status and the type of employment. Our I-9 Advanced presentation prepares your HR team for a variety of Form I-9 scenarios.
  • Reverifying and Rehires – practice pointers for HR professionals. Certain immigration statuses require HR professionals to reverify work authorization documents – but this process often relies on receipt notices from USCIS. Learn which documents must be reverified, how to record receipts, and other nuances in the I-9 process.
  • Correction, Storage and Purging Your Files – practice pointers for HR professionals. HOW you handle your I-9 files is a critical component of your I-9 Compliance strategy. FordMurray attorneys will walk you through the process of correcting Form I-9 and how to know when you can destroy files for terminated employees.
